Surah At-Tawbah, Ayah 67 (9:67)

ٱلتَّوْبَة

ٱلْمُنَٰفِقُونَ وَٱلْمُنَٰفِقَٰتُ بَعْضُهُم مِّنۢ بَعْضٍ ۚ يَأْمُرُونَ بِٱلْمُنكَرِ وَيَنْهَوْنَ عَنِ …

Quran 9:67 is ayah 67 of Surah At-Tawbah (“The Repentance”), a Medinan surah of 129 ayahs. It is in Juz 10, on page 197 of the Madani Mushaf.

ٱلْمُنَٰفِقُونَوَٱلْمُنَٰفِقَٰتُبَعْضُهُممِّنۢبَعْضٍ ۚيَأْمُرُونَبِٱلْمُنكَرِوَيَنْهَوْنَعَنِٱلْمَعْرُوفِوَيَقْبِضُونَأَيْدِيَهُمْ ۚنَسُوا۟ٱللَّهَفَنَسِيَهُمْ ۗإِنَّٱلْمُنَٰفِقِينَهُمُٱلْفَٰسِقُونَ٦٧
al-munāfiqūna wal-munāfiqātu baʿḍuhum min baʿḍin yamurūna bil-munkari wayanhawna ʿani l-maʿrūfi wayaqbiḍūna aydiyahum nasū l-laha fanasiyahum inna l-munāfiqīna humu l-fāsiqūna

The hypocrite men and hypocrite women are of one another. They enjoin what is wrong and forbid what is right and close their hands. They have forgotten Allāh, so He has forgotten them [accordingly]. Indeed, the hypocrites - it is they who are the defiantly disobedient.(67)

  3. بَعْضُهُمbaʿḍuhumsome of them

  6. يَأْمُرُونَyamurūnaThey enjoin
  7. بِٱلْمُنكَرِbil-munkarithe wrong
  8. وَيَنْهَوْنَwayanhawnaand forbid
  9. عَنِʿaniwhat
  10. ٱلْمَعْرُوفِl-maʿrūfi(is) the right
  11. وَيَقْبِضُونَwayaqbiḍūnaand they close
  12. أَيْدِيَهُمْ ۚaydiyahumtheir hands
  13. نَسُوا۟nasūThey forget
  14. ٱللَّهَl-lahaAllah
  15. فَنَسِيَهُمْ ۗfanasiyahumso He has forgotten them
  16. إِنَّinnaIndeed
  17. ٱلْمُنَٰفِقِينَl-munāfiqīnathe hypocrites
  18. هُمُhumuthey (are)
  19. ٱلْفَٰسِقُونَl-fāsiqūnathe defiantly disobedient

Other Characteristics of Hypocrites

Allah admonishes the hypocrites who, unlike the believers, who enjoin righteousness and forbid evil,

يَأْمُرُونَ بِالْمُنكَرِ وَيَنْهَوْنَ عَنِ الْمَعْرُوفِ وَيَقْبِضُونَ أَيْدِيَهُمْ

(they enjoin evil, and forbid the good, and they close their hands), from spending in Allah's cause,

نَسُواْ اللَّهَ

(They have forgotten Allah), they have forgotten the remembrance of Allah,

فَنَسِيَهُمْ

(so He has forgotten them.), by treating them as if He has forgotten them. Allah also,

وَقِيلَ الْيَوْمَ نَنسَاكُمْ كَمَا نَسِيتُمْ لِقَآءَ يَوْمِكُمْ هَـذَا

(And it will be said: "This Day We will forget you as you forgot the meeting of this Day of yours) 45:34. Allah said,

إِنَّ الْمُنَـفِقِينَ هُمُ الْفَـسِقُونَ

(Verily, the hypocrites are the rebellious) the rebellious from the way of truth who embrace the wicked way,

وَعَدَ الله الْمُنَـفِقِينَ وَالْمُنَـفِقَاتِ وَالْكُفَّارَ نَارَ جَهَنَّمَ

(Allah has promised the hypocrites -- men and women -- and the disbelievers, the fire of Hell), on account of their evildoing mentioned here,

خَـلِدِينَ فِيهَآ

(therein shall they abide.), for eternity, they and the disbelievers,

هِىَ حَسْبُهُمْ

(It will suffice them.), as a torment,

وَلَعَنَهُمُ اللَّهُ

(Allah has cursed them), He expelled and banished them from His mercy,

وَلَهُمْ عَذَابٌ مُّقِيمٌ

(and for them is the lasting torment.)
